Other vehicles

Emergency vehicles. A fire engine, an ambulance or a police vehicle sounding its warning device or operating its flashing beacon takes precedence over all other traffic. Move out of its course, stop, and remain stationary until it has passed. Choose where you stop: not on a bridge, not on a blind rise, not on a bend and not in a narrow section. Do not brake harshly on the approach to a junction or a traffic circle, because the driver behind you cannot see what you can see.

The state motorcade. If you hear the siren or see the blue flashing lights of the state motorcade, stop. On an undivided road, or where there is one lane for your direction, halt at the extreme left. Where there are two lanes going your way, halt at the extreme left if you are in the left lane, or alongside whatever is to your left if you are in the right lane. On a wider road, halt anywhere safe, which may include a lane reserved for right turning traffic. If you are already stopped in a lane at a controlled intersection, stay there until the motorcade has passed or a police officer directs you. Never try to overtake a motorcade or join it, and signal your intentions both as you slow to stop and as you resume.

Large vehicles. A bus, a kombi or a haulage truck needs more road to turn than you expect and may swing the opposite way first. If you cannot see the driver's mirrors, the driver cannot see you. Hang back, and give the vehicle the room and the time it needs. Following distance still applies: one vehicle length for every 15 km/h of your speed, and more again behind something that hides the road ahead.

Abnormal loads. An abnormal load vehicle is always under escort, carries red flags and flashing amber beacons, and runs with its headlamps on. It is not permitted on the road between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Because of its size it may occupy more than one lane and is often driven down the centre of the road. Never overtake one unless the rear escort signals you past or the road ahead is plainly clear, and obey the escort's instructions, which override the ordinary rules of the road.
