The D codes: D1, D, D1E and DE, the buses. The C codes were class 2, and code B was class 4.

An excavator is construction machinery, and BÊ covers construction machinery. A pick-up truck is driven under code B, and a motorcycle under A or A1.

Code D is the bus with more than sixteen seats besides the driver's. D1 is the smaller bus, and C is a heavy goods vehicle.

Code C is the goods vehicle of 7,500 kg gross or more. D is a bus, and BE a light vehicle drawing a trailer.

CE is a code C vehicle drawing a trailer. A code ending in E is the same vehicle with a trailer behind it, so BE is a light vehicle with one, and C1 has none.

Code B is the light motor vehicle: a car, a small van, a light truck of 2,300 kg net or less. It is the code most learners sit for, from sixteen.

BÊ is the tractor. It is not BE: without the mark, BE is a light motor vehicle drawing a trailer. The two look almost the same, so read the letter carefully.

C1, the smaller goods vehicle. A licence for C or CE also covers C1, C1E and BÊ. A is a motorcycle, and D1 a bus, which need codes of their own.

Eighteen. Some tables passed round give twenty one or twenty five, from an announcement made before the regulations were gazetted. The regulations say eighteen.

Thirty, with five years of driving, since January 2025. It is driven under a D code. A driver between twenty five and thirty who already drove one before then carries on.

Five years. A bus carries the public, so you begin on the D codes only after five years on a full licence for light or heavy vehicles.
