7. Nature and purpose of regulatory signs
(1) Regulatory signs shall, subject to the provisions of this Part, be those specified under Class I(a)(i) in the First Schedule.
(2) The restriction or control which each regulatory sign is intended to convey shall be as specified under such sign in Class I(a)(i) in the First Schedule.
(3) Regulatory signs shall be divided into:
(a) control signs;
(b) command signs;
(c) prohibition signs;
(d) reservation signs;
(e) comprehensive signs;
(f) exclusive secondary signs; and
(g) de-restriction signs;
8. Insignia, shape and colours of regulatory signs
(1) The shape of every regulatory sign shall be as follows:
(a) mandatory regulatory signs shall be circular, except the "stop" sign which shall be a regular octagon and the "yield (give way)" sign which shall be an inverted equilateral triangle;
(b) conditional regulatory signs shall all be rectangular, except the pedestrian priority sign (R5) which shall be diamond shaped.
(2) Subject to sections 28 and 32, the colours of the insignia of every regulatory sign to which this Part applies shall be as follows:
(a) regulatory signs which are control signs shall have a white retro-reflective border, a red background and a white inscription, whether permanent or temporary;
(b) regulatory signs which are restriction signs giving a command or conveying a reservation shall if:
(i) permanent, have a white reflective border, blue background and a white inscription;
(ii) temporary, have a black border, yellow background and black inscription.
(c) regulatory signs which are restriction signs that are prohibitory shall, if:
(i) permanent, have a red reflective border, white background and black inscription;
(ii) temporary, have a red reflective border, yellow background and black inscription.
(3) External or internal illumination may be specified as an alternative to the use of reflective materials.
(4) Mandatory prohibitory restriction signs which refer to actions and objects shall have a diagonal red slash, which should have the least effect in obscuring the inscription.
(5) A de-restriction sign shall display the original sign with a red cross superimposed on the face of the sign:
Provided that a speed restriction sign shall only be changed by display of a new speed limit and not a red cross as with other derestriction signs.
9. Symbol and inscription of regulatory signs
(1) The nature of the restriction or control intended to be conveyed by a regulatory sign shall be indicated by means of a symbol or inscription specified under Class I(a)(i) in the First Schedule or by both such symbol and inscription.
(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1), the Minister may authorise the use of a symbol or inscription other than one specified under Class I(a)(i) of the First Schedule if he or she is of the opinion that such instruction, inscription or symbol will better assist road users to comply with the restriction, prohibition, command or condition intended to be conveyed by the regulatory sign in question.
10. Position of regulatory signs
(1) Subject to the provisions of section 12 (no u-turn signs), every regulatory sign shall be erected or displayed on that side of the road which is to the left of drivers approaching the face of such sign:
Provided that any sign which relates only to traffic using the right-hand side of:
(a) one-way road; or
(b) the roadway of a road divided into separate roadways;
may be erected or displayed on that side of the road or roadway which is to the right of drivers approaching such sign.
(2) Every regulatory sign shall be erected as closely as possible to the point, object or area to which it relates, and in such a position as to be clearly visible to road users approaching it:
Provided that where, in the interests of safety and or to meet special conditions it is necessary or desirable to erect duplicate signs, such duplicate signs may be erected in any suitable place.
11. "Stop", "yield" and "priority" signs
(1) A "stop" sign shall be a regular octagon with a white border, and white uppercase inscription on a red background, all reflective.
(2) "Yield" signs shall be an inverted equilateral triangle with red border and white background without any inscription, all reflective.
(3) The back of every "yield" sign, and that portion of any post above the lowest edge of such sign shall be coloured grey.
(4) A "stop" sign shall not be erected on an approach to any road intersection or junction or cross-roads if there is a "yield" sign on any other approach to such road intersection or junction or cross-roads.
(5) A "yield" sign shall not be erected on an approach to any road intersection or junction or cross roads if there is a "stop" sign on any other approach to such road intersection or junction or cross-roads.
12. "No U turn" signs
Where any "no U turn" sign is erected on a physical obstruction on a road, no additional sign need be erected to indicate the prohibition.
13. "Yield" signs
No "yield sign" signs shall be erected outside an urban area.
14. "Level crossing" signs
A "level crossing" sign may be displayed a distance of "V" metres (where V is the operating speed on the road before it intersects with the level crossing in kilometres per hour).
15. Signs regulating parking, stopping and hawkers
(1) A regulatory sign relating to the parking of a vehicle and the prohibition of hawkers shall be displayed at each end and on that side of a portion of the public road where the significance of such sign is to be applicable:
Provided that:
(a) any other regulatory road traffic sign may be displayed within any such portion of public road;
(b) any other regulatory road traffic sign may be displayed within any such junction in which event such regulatory road traffic sign shall prevail over any sign relating to the parking of a vehicle;
(c) in respect of any section of a public road which lies between the nearest intersecting public roads and which does not exceed 75 metres in length, parking or hawking may be prohibited or restricted in such section by displaying only one appropriate sign;
(d) where the significance of such sign is to apply to any portion of a public road other than the side of such public road, such sign may be displayed:
(i) on that portion of such public road to which its significance is to apply; or
(ii) in the case of a no parking sign on any traffic island; or
(iii) other raised area surrounded by the roadway of such public road adjacent to such portion;
and in the case of a no parking sign, its significance shall apply to any parking bay demarcated at a distance of not more than 500 millimetres from such sign and if that bay is one of several demarcated parking bays adjoining one another, to all such adjoining parking bays within a distance of 75 metres from such sign and for the purposes of this subparagraph parking bays demarcated within two and a half metres of each other shall be deemed to be adjoining parking bays.
(2) A regulatory sign prohibiting or restricting the stopping of a vehicle, shall be displayed at each end and on that side of the section of a public road where the significance thereof is to be applicable:
Provided that:
(a) no junction shall be included in any such section of public road; or
(b) in respect of any section of public road which lies between the nearest intersecting public roads and which does not exceed 75 metres in length, stopping may be prohibited or restricted in such section by displaying only one appropriate sign.
(3) A regulatory sign relating to the parking or stopping of a vehicle shall, unless it is displayed with the face parallel to the lateral line of the public road, display a similar sign on the reverse side.
