16. Nature and purpose of regulatory signs
(1) Warning signs shall be divided into:
(a) advance warning signs:
(i) road layout signs;
(ii) direction of movement signs; and
(iii) symbolic signs;
(b) hazard marker warning signs;
(2) Warning signs are used to alert drivers to hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions on or adjacent to the roadway and indicate a need for extra caution by road users.

(3) The insignia of every warning sign shall be an equilateral triangle having one apex upright, which triangle shall, subject to section 19(1), form part of every such sign.
(4) The triangle referred to in subsection (3) shall:
(a) for permanent warning signs have a reflective red border and enclosed within that red border, a black symbol on white background; and
(a) for temporary warning signs, have a black border and enclosed within such a border, a black symbol on a high visibility yellow background.
(5) Hazard marker signs shall be rectangular or X-shaped and shall be:
(a) red retro-reflective on white retro-reflective background if permanent;
(b) black semi-matt on yellow retro-reflective background if temporary.
17. Symbols and inscriptions of warning signs
(1) The nature of the danger of which the warning is intended to be given by a warning sign shall be indicated by means of a symbol or inscription specified under Class I(a)(ii) in the First Schedule, or by both such symbol and inscription which symbol or inscription shall be coloured black.
(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1), the Minister may authorise the use of a symbol or inscription other than one specified under Class I(a)(ii) of the First Schedule if he or she is of the opinion that such instruction, symbol or inscription will better assist road users of the danger lying ahead.
18. Position of warning signs
(1) Every warning sign shall be erected or placed on that side of the road which is to the left of drivers approaching the face of such sign.
(2) Subject to the provisions of section 20 ("Animals ahead" and "traffic control ahead" signs), every warning sign shall be not more than 300 metres from the point of danger.
(3) Hazard marker signs shall be located at the hazard, or as near as possible to the hazard but not more than 50 metres from the hazard:
Provided that where, in the interests of safety and to meet special conditions, it is necessary or desirable to erect duplicate signs, such duplicates signs may be erected in any suitable place.
(4) Every warning sign shall be so sited as to be clearly visible to road users approaching the face of such sign.
19. "Roundabout" and traffic light signals ahead" signs
Every "roundabout" and "traffic light ahead" sign may be displayed with the inscription in the triangle of a danger warning sign.
20. "Animals ahead" and "traffic control ahead" signs
Notwithstanding section 18:
(a) "traffic control ahead" signs; and
(b) signs warning against animals may be placed in any suitable position either on or off the roadway of any road so as to give timely warning to approaching road users; and
(c) a "workmen ahead" sign may be placed in any suitable position either on or off the roadway of any road.
21. Emergency warning of danger
Despite any other provision of this Part, whenever it is urgently necessary to give warning of the existence of some new danger on the road, a red flag by day or a red light by night may be temporarily displayed in the absence of or in conjunction with the warning sign.
