Part V: Class II: Road Markings

What this law means

27. Nature and purpose of road markings

(1) Road markings may be defined as markings embedded in, or applied or attached to the road surface, kerbing or to an object within or adjacent to the roadway for the purpose of regulating, warning or guiding traffic and delineate the limits of the roadway and all or portions of the travelled way.

(2) Road markings shall be:

(a) regulatory markings:

(i) transverse regulatory markings; and

(ii) longitudinal regulatory markings;

(b) warning markings;

(c) guidance markings;

(d) road studs; and

(e) other delineation devices.

(3) The following general rules shall apply to road markings:

(a) broken longitudinal lines are permissive in character;

(b) continuous solid longitudinal lines are restrictive in character; and

(c) double continuous solid lines indicate maximum levels of restriction.

(4) The minimum width of any line marking shall be 100 mm.

(5) Only 3 colours of road markings may be used:

(a) white; and

(b) yellow; and

(c) red:

Provided that the colour black may be used for kerbface marking GM8.

28. (i) Regulatory markings

(1) The purpose of regulatory markings shall be to convey an instruction to road users that the use of the road or area is subject to some restriction.

(2) Failure to obey regulatory markings shall be an offence.

(3) A Stop Line regulatory marking RTM1 shall only be used in conjunction with traffic signals and STOP sign R1 and its derivatives.

(4) Pedestrian Crossing Lines RTM3 and Block Pedestrian Crossing Markings RTM4 shall be preceded by Stop Line marking RTM1 when used at a traffic signal controlled crossing, or a Yield Line marking RTM2 when used at a road sign controlled crossing.

(5) A Yield Line regulatory marking RTM2 shall only be used in conjunction with YIELD sign R2 and its derivatives.

(6) Every continuous solid longitudinal marking is regulatory and shall be not less than 10 m long.

(7) Where a continuous solid longitudinal marking is combined with a dividing line WM3, traffic travelling in either direction shall comply with the warrants of the line to the left of such combination of lines as viewed from their lane.

(8) Zig zag lines shall only be used to mark a zig zag zone.

(9) A No Stopping line RM12 shall be red in colour, continuous for 24 hour applicability and broken for applicability during limited periods of the day.

(10) A No Parking line RM13 shall be yellow in colour, continuous for 24 hour applicability and broken for applicability during limited periods of the day.

(11) A No Parking line RM13 shall only be marked on urban roads.

29. (ii) Warning markings

(1) The purpose of warning markings shall be to warn road users of any changes on and around the road that may constitute a danger.

(2) Where a Continuity Line marking WM2 is used between two streams of traffic, it shall be located between streams travelling in the same direction.

(3) At least one Mandatory Direction Arrow Ahead marking WM7 shall precede a Mandatory Direction marking RM8 in a lane and shall have an identical shape to the RM8 marking used in such lane.

30. Guidance markings

(1) The purpose of guidance markings shall be:

(a) to assist road users to position their vehicles correctly on the road; and

(b) to guide pedestrians and cyclists into suitable channels for the purpose of crossing roads.

(2) A Lane Line marking GM1 shall only be used within a portion of roadway carrying only vehicles which are travelling in the same direction.

(3) Kerbface markings GM8 shall comprise alternating sections of black and white painted kerbing.

31. Road studs

(1) Road studs may be used to supplement road markings, especially where road markings are subject to conditions of poor or limited visibility.

(2) Only 3 colours of road studs may be used:

(a) red to convey meaning of prohibition;

(b) yellow to convey meaning of warning; and

(c) white to convey meaning of guidance.

32. Other delineation devices

(1) Delineation devices are used to warn road users of barriers and to indicate the alignment of roads.

(2) Delineation devices shall be red retroreflective on white retroreflective background if they are permanent, and black semi matt on yellow reflective background if temporary.
