These are the rules for what a vehicle must be and carry before it goes on a road: its size and mass, its lights, reflectors, brakes, tyres and mirrors, the kit in the cab, and how it may tow and be loaded. Many of the VID papers' questions about vehicles come from here, and so do most of the equipment offences in the police deposit fine schedule.
Section 52: every motor vehicle carries two warning triangles, and two more for each trailer it draws, so a vehicle with two trailers carries six. When it stops on a road, one goes in front and one behind, on its own side of the road, each not less than 30 m and not more than 50 m away.
Section 53: every motor vehicle except a motorcycle carries a serviceable spare wheel, a jack, a wheel spanner and a fire extinguisher, of at least 0.75 kg in a light vehicle and 1.5 kg in a heavy one.
Section 69: no motor vehicle may tow more than three trailers. A towed vehicle may be no more than 4 m behind, no heavier than the vehicle towing it, and not loaded, and on a rope rather than a tow bar the pair may not go faster than 30 km/h.
Section 41: every trailer carries a white reflective T at the extreme right front and a red one at the extreme right rear, each at least 150 mm high on a black ground.
