Traffic deposit fines, 2024
A deposit fine is the fine a police officer may accept from you for a traffic offence you admit, instead of sending the case to court. This schedule lists each offence, the section of the law it breaks, its fine level and the amount that level stood for when the schedule was drawn up.
Every row names its law. The licensing offences come from the vehicle registration laws and the Road Traffic Act, the moving offences from the Rules of the Road Regulations of 1974, and the equipment offences (lights, reflectors, brakes, triangles, tyres, towing, loading) from SI 129 of 2015. Towing more than three trailers, for example, is section 69(2) of SI 129 of 2015, at level 2.
The levels are the standard scale of fines: level 1 is US$5, level 2 US$15 and level 3 US$30. The scale is changed from time to time and amounts are payable in local currency at the day's rate, so what an officer asks for today may differ from what is printed here.
