The Highway Code sets out how every road user in Zimbabwe is expected to behave: drivers, riders, cyclists, passengers, pedestrians and people driving animals. Some of what it contains is prescribed by law. The rest is dictated by good sense and courtesy, and no one category is more important than the other.
Signals tell other road users what you intend to do. Give them clearly and give them early: at least 50 m before you turn in ordinary city traffic, and 100 m before a turn on a main road at speed. As a general rule the signal goes on before you brake, because it is no use signalling what you are already doing.
Your headlights must be on between 17:30 and 06:30. Use them outside those hours too whenever visibility is limited, in rain, mist, smoke or dust. Lights are as much about being seen as about seeing.
Control begins with the speed you chose before you needed it. Adjust that speed to the weather, the light, the road, the traffic and your own ability to handle the vehicle, and everything else about the driving gets easier.
Speed limits are the maximum speeds allowed by law. They are not a promise that the speed is safe. On a wet road, in a busy street or where you cannot see far along the road, the safe speed is lower than the posted one.
Drive at a speed that lets you stop well within the distance you can see to be clear. Anything beyond that distance is something you have not seen yet.
Road markings are instructions painted on the road surface, and the one that governs you is always the one on your own side of the centre.
Where your side of the road is divided into lanes by markings, choose the proper lane for your route and stay in it until you have good reason to move to another. On a road with two or more lanes running the same way, keep left and move right only to overtake or to turn right. Never drive on the crown of the road.
You must not hold any communication device while driving. That covers a phone in your hand, a hand-held microphone, and anything else you have to hold, look at or work while the vehicle is moving. Proper control of the vehicle is the driver's first duty, and one hand on the wheel is not proper control.
