Every term in this group

Headlamps

Also called headlights.

The two big lights at the front of a vehicle. They light the road ahead at night. Headlamps and headlights are the same thing.

Number 1 on a car from the front. In the papers: 24 questions, first in Test 1.

Side lights

Also called park lights and side lamps.

Two small lights at the front that show how wide the vehicle is. They are for being seen, not for seeing the road.

Number 2 on a car from the front. In the papers: 5 questions, first in Test 1.

Indicators

Also called direction indicators.

The flashing lights at the corners of a vehicle. They show that you are about to turn or move to the left or to the right.

Number 3 on a car from the front. In the papers: 28 questions, first in Test 1.

Spot lights

Extra lights at the front that throw a strong narrow beam. A vehicle may have two. They are not used in place of headlamps.

Number 4 on a car from the front. In the papers: 5 questions, first in Test 3.

Fog lights

Low, wide lights for fog, heavy mist, heavy rain or dust. They are switched off when you can see well again.

Number 5 on a car from the front. In the papers: 1 question, first in Test 11.

Reflectors

Pieces of glass or plastic that shine when a light falls on them. They are white at the front and red at the rear.

Number 6 on a car from the front. In the papers: 4 questions, first in Test 8.

Stop lights

Also called brake lights.

The red lights at the rear that come on when the driver presses the foot brake. They tell the driver behind that you are slowing down.

Number 1 on a car from the rear. In the papers: 1 question, first in Test 6.

Tail lights

The red lights at the rear. They are on whenever the headlamps or side lights are on, so that drivers behind can see the vehicle.

Number 2 on a car from the rear. In the papers: 3 questions, first in Test 12.

Main beam

Also called high beam, full beam and bright beam.

The headlamps at their strongest, pointing straight ahead. They light the road for at least 70 m, and they blind a driver who faces them.

Number 1 on main beam and dipped beam. In the papers: 7 questions, first in Test 3.

Dipped beam

Also called low beam, dip and dipped headlights.

The headlamps turned down towards the road, so that they do not shine into the eyes of other drivers. To dip is to turn them down. Dipped and low beam are the same thing.

Number 2 on main beam and dipped beam. In the papers: 12 questions, first in Test 1.

Hazard lights

Also called hazards.

All the indicators flashing together. They warn others that the vehicle is stopped or in trouble.

In the papers: 3 questions, first in Test 6.

Beacon

A flashing light on top of a vehicle, seen from all sides. It is amber on a breakdown vehicle and on an abnormal load.
