Every term in this group

Steering wheel

The wheel the driver turns to point the vehicle. In Zimbabwe it is on the right side of the vehicle.

Number 1 on the driver's seat. In the papers: 4 questions, first in Test 8.

Hooter

Also called horn.

The button in the steering wheel that makes a warning sound. Hooter and horn are the same thing.

Number 2 on the driver's seat. In the papers: 19 questions, first in Test 1.

Clutch

The pedal on the left. Pressing it cuts the engine off from the gears, so that you can change gear.

Number 3 on the driver's seat. In the papers: 3 questions, first in Test 12.

Foot brake

The middle pedal. It slows the vehicle and stops it while it is moving.

Number 4 on the driver's seat. In the papers: 2 questions, first in Test 11.

Accelerator

The pedal on the right. Pressing it makes the vehicle go faster.

Gears

Also called low gear, heavy gear and high gear.

The gears set how hard the engine pulls. A low gear, also called a heavy gear, pulls hard and is slow: first and second. A high gear pulls less and is fast.

Hand brake

Also called parking brake.

The lever beside the driver. It holds a stopped vehicle where it is. Hand brake and parking brake are the same thing.

Sun visor

The flap above the windscreen that the driver pulls down to keep the sun out of the eyes.

Rear view mirror

Also called wing mirrors and side mirrors.

The mirror inside the vehicle that shows the road behind. Wing mirrors, or side mirrors, are the ones outside on the doors.

Blind spot

The part of the road beside and behind you that no mirror shows. You turn your head to see it.

Free play

Also called steering backlash.

How far the steering wheel turns before the road wheels begin to move. It may not be more than 45 degrees.

Neutral

The position of the gear lever in which no gear is chosen. The engine runs but does not drive the wheels.

Reverse gear

Also called reversing.

The gear that drives the vehicle backwards.

In the papers: 11 questions, first in Test 2.

Engine braking

The pull of the engine that slows the vehicle when you take your foot off the accelerator in a low gear.

Choke

A control on older vehicles that helps a cold engine to start.
